Location first

In a Kumbh, where you stay matters more than what you stay in

On major bathing days, vehicles are stopped well away from the ghats and the last stretch is on foot. A cheaper room on the wrong side of the river or the city can cost you hours. Choose the area first, then the room.

Walking distance

Stay within walking distance of your ghat and you avoid the vehicle restrictions altogether — but pay more, book earlier, and live with the noise.

A short ride out

A few kilometres away you get calmer surroundings and more choice. On bathing days, expect to walk the last part.

A base further away

Big hotels on the city's edge, or a nearby city like Rishikesh or Indore, work well outside peak days and poorly on them.

Before you pay

A booking checklist for Kumbh stays

  1. Get the exact location

Ask for a map pin, not just an area name. Check the walking route to your ghat, not the driving distance.

  2. Ask about bathing-day access

Will vehicles be allowed to reach the property on Amrit Snan days? If not, how far is the walk?

  3. Confirm what's included

Bathroom attached or shared, hot water, bedding, meals, and whether tents are heated in winter.

  4. Read the cancellation terms

Kumbh bookings often have strict terms. Get them in writing.

  5. Pay traceably

Pay through a platform or to a verified business account and keep the receipt. Be wary of 'last room' pressure and unusually low prices.

Worth knowing

Watch out for fake listings

Every Kumbh brings fake booking sites and social-media offers. Book through official Mela channels or verified operators, and cross-check any listing before you pay.
