The idea

A Mela built around an existing city

Haridwar's Kumbh works differently from Prayagraj's. There is no empty floodplain to build a temporary city on — the heart of the Mela is a living town, with Har Ki Pauri in the middle of its old bazaars. Instead, the Mela is fitted around the city: into the islands and banks between the Ganga's two channels, along the riverfront upstream and downstream, and on open land on the city's edges.

The notified Mela area is also unusually long. It follows the Ganga upstream beyond Haridwar towards Rishikesh, including the ghats at Muni ki Reti and Swargashram on the far bank — which is why the Haridwar Kumbh crosses district lines and is administered as one special Mela zone split into sectors.

For how the river itself is divided between the canal and the main stream, see our Ghats of Haridwar guide. This page is about how the Mela uses that ground.

How it moves

Getting around the Haridwar Mela

  1. Bridges over the channels

Because the ground is split by water, bridges — permanent and temporary — are the key links. On bathing days many are made one-way.

  2. Vehicles stop outside

Private vehicles are held on the approach roads from Delhi, Dehradun and Najibabad, with parking on the city's outskirts and islands. The old city is walked.

  3. Akhadas come from their ashrams

Unlike Prayagraj, many akhadas process to Har Ki Pauri from permanent bases in Haridwar and Kankhal, along set routes cleared for the day.

  4. A long, thin Mela

Because the zone stretches along the river rather than spreading out, crowds build in lines along the ghats. Using a less central ghat is often the fastest way to bathe.

Worth knowing

Where the akhadas are

Haridwar is home turf for several akhadas — the Naya Udasin and Nirmal akhadas have their main seats here, and many Shaiva orders keep large ashrams in Haridwar and Kankhal. See The 13 Akhadas for the full list.

Before you go

Finding your way in Haridwar during the Mela

Pick your ghat in advance

Har Ki Pauri is the goal for many, but the Mela spreads bathing along kilometres of riverfront. Choose a ghat close to where you stay.

Stay by zone, not just by price

Where you sleep decides which bridges and routes you'll use. Staying on the same side of the river as your ghat saves hours.

Rishikesh is an option

Rishikesh falls within the wider Mela area and is quieter. It's about 25 km upstream by road.

Mark a landmark

The clock tower opposite Har Ki Pauri, the Mansa Devi ropeway and the bridges make easy meeting points.

Watch the water

Current is strong in both channels. Bathe only at marked ghats with chains and lifeguards.

Follow official advisories

Route diversions and one-way systems are announced by the Mela administration and can change day to day.
