Old city
Around Mahakal
Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga
Old city · Heart of Ujjain
The only south-facing Jyotirlinga. Its Bhasma Aarti before dawn is the most sought-after ritual in the city and needs advance booking; general darshan runs through the day. Allow time for queues, especially on Mondays and festivals.
Shri Mahakal Lok
Around Mahakaleshwar · Adjoining the temple
The corridor opened in 2022 that enlarged the temple precinct to around 47 hectares, with murals and sculptures from the Shiva Purana. Beautiful in the evening when it's lit.
Harsiddhi Temple
Old city · Between Mahakal and Ram Ghat
A goddess temple linked with King Vikramaditya, known for two tall pillars of lamps that are lit on festival evenings — a spectacular sight when it happens.
Bade Ganesh & Chaubis Khamba
Near Mahakaleshwar · Short walk
A large Ganesh image just by the Mahakal temple, and the old 'twenty-four pillar' gateway nearby with shrines to Mahamaya and Mahalaya.
Gopal Mandir
Main market · ~1 km from Mahakal
A 19th-century marble temple built by Bayajibai Shinde, wife of Daulatrao Scindia, with a silver-coated image of Krishna. Its silver-plated doors are the subject of a long local story.
The northern circuit
North along the Shipra
Kal Bhairav Temple
Bhairavgarh · ~5 km north
One of the eight famous Bhairav shrines, on the Shipra. Liquor is offered to the deity — a custom unique to this temple.
Gadkalika & Bhartrihari Caves
North, near the Shipra · ~4 km
Gadkalika is the Kali temple where the poet Kalidasa is said to have received the goddess's grace. Nearby are the caves where Bhartrihari, the step-brother of Vikramaditya, is believed to have meditated after renouncing his throne.
Sandipani Ashram
Ankpat area · ~3–4 km
Where tradition says Krishna, Balarama and Sudama studied under the sage Sandipani. The Gomti Kund and the slab where the boys are said to have practised their numbers are shown to visitors.
Mangalnath Temple
North, on the Shipra · ~5 km
Held to mark the birthplace of Mars; pujas for mangal dosh are performed here, especially on Tuesdays.
Siddhavat
Bhairavgarh · ~5 km
A sacred banyan on the Shipra bank, likened to Prayagraj's Akshayavat, where shraddha rites are performed.
Kaliadeh Palace
North, on the Shipra · ~8 km
A palace built in 1458 by the Sultan of Mandu and restored by the Scindias in 1920, with Persian inscriptions recording visits by Akbar and Jahangir.
South & east
The observatory and the outer temples
Vedh Shala (observatory)
By the Shipra · ~2 km
An observatory built by Maharaja Jai Singh II in the 1720s — one of five he built across north India, and still used for astronomical observation.
Chintaman Ganesh Temple
South-east · ~7 km
An ancient Ganesh temple on the Fatehabad line; families traditionally bring the first wedding invitation here.
Navagraha Temple (Triveni)
Indore road · ~5 km
Temple of the nine planets at Triveni Ghat, crowded on Shanichari Amavasya.
