A temple city on the Malwa plateau
Ujjain is one of India's oldest cities — ancient Avantika — and the only Kumbh host whose identity is as much about a temple as a river.
Ujjain stands on the rolling black-soil Malwa plateau, about 494 metres above sea level, on the east bank of the Shipra. The land is gentle rather than dramatic: no mountains, no great floodplain — just a modest river curving north past a dense old city of temples.
At the heart of that old city is the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, and around it has grown the Shri Mahakal Lok corridor, opened in October 2022, which enlarged the temple precinct from under 3 hectares to around 47. Between the temple and the river lie Harsiddhi and the lanes leading down to Ram Ghat, so for most visitors Ujjain's sacred geography is a short walk: river, temple, goddess.
Ujjain is also counted among the Sapta Puri, the seven sacred cities of Hindu tradition, and it was long a centre of Indian astronomy — the observatory (Vedh Shala) built by Raja Jai Singh still stands by the Shipra.

Mahakal & the old city
The temple quarter around Mahakaleshwar and Mahakal Lok, with Harsiddhi, Bade Ganesh and the lanes down to Ram Ghat. Most pilgrims spend their time here.
Freeganj
The newer commercial town on the other side of the railway line from the old city, with hotels, restaurants and shops.
Nanakheda
The southern area with the main bus stand and ISKCON temple, on the road to Indore.
Bhairavgarh
North of the city along the Shipra: the Kal Bhairav temple, Siddhavat and a traditional centre of hand-block printed textiles.
Kaliadeh & Mangalnath (north)
Further north: the Mangalnath temple on the Shipra and the Kaliadeh palace set on an island in the river.

Which area to stay in
Staying near Mahakal puts you within walking distance of the temple and Ram Ghat. Freeganj has more hotels and is a short ride away. During the Simhastha, tent cities on the Mela ground add another option.
