Reading the map

Four things the map tells you

  1. It's a river journey

Everything lies along the upper Godavari: source at Trimbak, reservoir at Gangapur, ghats at Panchavati, camps at Tapovan. Following the river is the easiest way to orient yourself.

  2. Trimbak is uphill and west

You climb gently from Nashik into the Ghats. Trimbak is cooler, wetter and more confined — pack differently for a day there.

  3. Nashik's transport sits east and south

The railway station, the main highway and the airport approaches are all on the east and south of the city, so crowds approach Ramkund from that side.

  4. One road links the venues

The Nashik–Trimbak road is the only practical link between the two bathing zones. That is why moving between them on a major bathing day is rarely realistic.

Worth knowing

Planning a two-venue trip

On ordinary days you can bathe at Ramkund in the morning and reach Kushavarta in about an hour. In a Kumbh year, pick one venue per day and use the days between Amrit Snans to see the other.
